Westboro Jerks Chased Off — But They Win

UPDATE: This is apparently from an incident this past May, and not “recent” as I had assumed. And the van didn’t belong to the Westboro idiots, but to the local fire department.

In May I saw first-hand the Westboro Baptist Church loons demonstrating outside the funeral for Rick Herrema of Hudsonville, MI. Though they were jerks and everyone knew it, there were no altercations. A recent demonstration at another funeral didn’t end so well. From Stop the ACLU:

Though I have no sympathy for these idiots, I suspect that the cry of “all right, we’ve got a broken window!” was one of triumph rather than of fear. The video was obviously shot by someone with the group. They probably released it or “leaked” it to get it seen. (I’m guessing, though. There don’t seem to be many details on this incident at this point.)

They want to be attacked.

That’s how the lawsuits will start.

  1. yea yea, I know everyone who has read my posts thinks I am a liberal haha, but those people deserve to have bad thing happen to them… seriously man, they are nothing but evil. But I think Murdoc is right that was filmed so they can file a law suit like little cowards. It was triumph

  2. Lawsuits only work if the person committing the tort can be identified. Keep a balaclava in your back pocket when attending military funerals.

  3. Kristopher: It’s not the individuals I’d be so concerned about. It would be the police departments, the church, the property owners, the city, the county, etc. etc. etc. Since it was a Fire Department van they were in, they’ll probably sue the Fire Department for moving them in a van that showered them with broken glass. Yes, it’s a total crock. It’s also how our legal system functions. Since this happened in May, maybe some of this is already under way. Or maybe it’s not and I’m wrong. I haven’t had a chance to look it up yet. I do know for a fact that the police officers at the funeral I went to earlier this year were NOT there because they were afraid that Westboro loons would get hurt or out of any sort of sympathy for them. They were there to ‘keep order’. Period.

  4. I think people should call them what they are. The Westboro Hate Group. Calling them a church is an insult to actual church going people.

  5. r: Interestingly, the Westboro idiots ARE listed on the Map of US Hate Groups I linked to in the 02 Dec 2006 Friday Linkzookery. And they’re listed under category ‘Other’ instead of ‘Christian Identity’ like some others who have a more-legitimate (though certainly not always correct) claim to being what we could consider a real church. I’ve thought about whether I’d call them a ‘Baptist Church’ when I write about them, and decided that I would because anyone who: A) Knows anything about them and B) Knows anything about Baptist churches and C) Thinks that the Westboro loons are representative of Baptist churches or Christianity in general are D) Hopeless causes

  6. It will eventually come to blood. These people are pushing way to many buttons with their activities. It won’t be from some ‘radical extremist’ etc. etc. either. It will be from someone normally deemed stable. These people really need to get a grip. Eventually they’ll punch one to many buttons with the wrong person in the wrong situation and there will be blood. I don’t think they’ve realised how ‘competent’ some of the people they’re infuriating can be. The only thing protecting them so far is not their 1st amendment rights or the police. Only moral and social restrictions. Those restrictions are probably wearing very thing now in some communities.
